Women and Girls Empowerment Through Community Engagement in Plateau State, Nigeria

Women and Girls Empowerment Through Community Engagement in Plateau State, Nigeria

Women and girls empowerment begins with creating safe spaces where voices are heard, respected, and supported. In many communities across Jos South and Jos North, women’s Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and adolescent girls’ groups have long operated in isolation, with limited access to community leadership, resources, and decision-making platforms.

Through targeted community engagement initiatives, our team helped bridge this gap by connecting women and girls directly with traditional leaders in their communities. The result became a transformative step toward stronger social inclusion, recognition, and sustainable community partnerships.

Background: Why Women and Girls Needed Stronger Community Support

Women’s Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) play an important role in supporting financial resilience, entrepreneurship, and peer support among vulnerable women. Similarly, adolescent girls’ groups create safe spaces where young girls can build confidence, share experiences, and access mentorship opportunities.

However, many of these groups in Jos South and Jos North have historically functioned in silos. Despite their impact at the grassroots level, they often lacked: (1) Recognition from community leadership, (2) Access to local support systems, (3) Opportunities to influence community decisions, and (4) Sustainable partnerships for long-term growth. Without broader community integration, many groups struggled to sustain their activities beyond basic savings and peer support initiatives.

This challenge highlighted the urgent need for stronger community engagement strategies that would position women and girls as active contributors to local development.

Creating Dialogue Through Village Square Meetings

To strengthen women and girls empowerment efforts, we facilitated Village Square Meetings that brought together four (4) women’s VSLA groups, two (2) adolescent girls’ groups, Traditional leaders & community chiefs, and Local stakeholders & community influencers.

For many participants, this was the first time they confidently engaged traditional leaders in open dialogue. Women and girls openly discussed their challenges, aspirations, and ideas for improving their communities. These conversations helped shift perceptions and demonstrated the value of inclusive community participation.

Why This Approach Matters

Community engagement is most effective when local leadership becomes part of the solution. It is evident that by creating opportunities for dialogue between marginalized groups and traditional authorities, communities become more inclusive, collaborative, and resilient. This approach helps: (1) Build trust between communities and leadership, (2) Increase visibility for women-led initiatives, (3) Encourage local ownership of development programs, and (4) Strengthen long-term sustainability. For donors and development partners, these kinds of locally driven relationships are often strong indicators of sustainable impact.

Traditional Leaders Supporting Women and Girls Empowerment

One of the most powerful moments during the engagement came when the Chief of Vwang publicly demonstrated support for the women and girls’ groups by contributing ₦20,000 toward their activities. While symbolic in amount, the gesture represented recognition, trust, Community ownership, and validation of women-led initiatives.

The chiefs also welcomed the groups warmly and encouraged continued collaboration between women, girls, and community leadership structures.

This support signaled an important shift — women and girls were no longer seen only as beneficiaries, but as valuable contributors to community development.

Building Sustainable Community Partnerships

By connecting women and girls’ groups with traditional leadership structures, the project helped build social capital that can extend far beyond the duration of a single intervention. Today, groups that once operated in isolation are increasingly recognized as community actors with growing influence and stronger support networks. Some emerging outcomes include:

  • Increased confidence among women and adolescent girls
  • Greater community recognition of VSLA groups
  • Improved access to local leadership support
  • Stronger opportunities for collaboration and sustainability

These foundations are critical for ensuring that community-based interventions continue to thrive long after external funding cycles end.

Why Community-Led Empowerment Matters for Long-Term Development

Development programs are most sustainable when communities themselves become invested in the process. Empowering women and girls through local partnerships creates ripple effects that extend into households, schools, livelihoods, and future generations. When traditional leaders, women’s groups, and young girls work together, communities become better positioned to:

  • Address social exclusion
  • Improve economic participation
  • Support youth leadership
  • Strengthen social cohesion
  • Encourage locally owned development solutions

For private sector partners and individual donors, investing in community-led empowerment initiatives offers an opportunity to support measurable, sustainable, and human-centered impact.

Looking Ahead

The growing partnership between women’s groups, adolescent girls, and traditional leaders in Jos South and Jos North demonstrates the power of inclusive community engagement.

What began as isolated savings and support groups is evolving into a stronger network of recognized community actors capable of influencing local development and sustaining positive change.

As these relationships continue to grow, they provide a foundation for more inclusive communities where women and girls are not only heard — but actively shaping the future of their communities.
