From Academic Setbacks to Purpose: Adaobi's Story

Youth skills development is becoming one of the most effective ways to help young Nigerians overcome educational setbacks and build sustainable careers.

Studies estimate that between 40 – 60% of private candidates have had to repeat examinations after unsuccessful attempts. For many young people, repeated academic setbacks often lead to discouragement, low self-esteem, uncertainty, and loss of direction.

Adaobi was one of those young people.

After an unsuccessful attempt at the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC), she was preparing to write the examination again. But behind that decision was a deeper struggle. She felt discouraged. Confused. Emotionally exhausted.

Like many young people facing repeated academic setbacks, she began questioning her future and where she truly belonged.

“Everything felt like I was going round in circles without reaching anywhere.”

She had always been interested in media and storytelling. She even tried joining the media team in her church, hoping to develop her passion. Unfortunately, the opportunity never came. Without direction, her confidence continued to decline.

Then One Opportunity Changed Everything.

When Adaobi learned about the AYP Tech Hub, implemented by Heal The Youth Foundation, she saw something she had not felt in a long time: Hope.

Looking through the available courses, Photography and Videography immediately stood out. It wasn’t simply another training programme. It was an opportunity to build on something she genuinely loved.

“Choosing Photography and Videography at the Hub turned my life around completely. It gave me hope, direction and a sense of purpose again.”

More Than Technical Skills

Over the next ten months, Adaobi received intensive practical training in photography, videography, digital creativity and professional work ethics. But the Hub offered far more than technical instruction.

She found mentors who believed in her. She learned alongside other young people navigating similar life challenges. She participated in recreational activities that helped build friendships, confidence and emotional resilience.

The supportive learning environment allowed her to rediscover her strengths while developing practical skills that employers value. By graduation, she wasn’t simply leaving with technical knowledge. She was leaving with confidence.

A Different Future Became Possible

The transformation soon became visible. Employers began recognising the quality of her work during job applications. Her passion for media evolved into a clear career path.

Before joining the Hub, studying Film and Multimedia had never crossed her mind. After months of hands-on learning, she realised she had discovered both her talent and her purpose. Today, Adaobi is studying Film and Multimedia Studies at university, building on the foundation she developed through the AYP Tech Hub.

Impact That Continues Beyond One Person

Perhaps the greatest measure of success is not what Adaobi achieved for herself. It is what she is now doing for others.

Inspired by her own journey, she founded the Living Hope Initiative, a community-based effort that encourages and equips young girls through creative skills training, mentorship, personal development, hygiene education and confidence-building activities. The hope she once received is now being multiplied.

Why Stories Like Adaobi’s Matter

Adaobi’s story reflects what happens when vulnerable young people are given more than temporary assistance. They receive opportunity. They discover purpose. They build livelihoods. And many choose to invest back into their communities.

This is the change Heal The Youth Foundation has pursued since 2003—helping children, young people and women build the knowledge, confidence and opportunities they need to transform their own futures and create lasting impact for others.
